2024 Big Garden Birdwatch

The next RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch will be taking place between 26-28th January and, as well as providing valuable data on garden bird numbers, it is a great opportunity to spend some time outdoors connecting with nature – more ‘greentime’ and less ‘screentime’.

You don’t need to be a ‘bird nerd’ to take part as the RSPB has some useful resources to help make the birdwatch simple and easy to organise. You can find further information here.

The bird Population paradox

Many people are surprised to learn that the UK bird population is in a dramatic state of decline with the RSPB estimating we have lost 30 million birds in the last 60 years. This decline may be difficult to comprehend as bird feeders have become a popular way to encourage birds into the garden however, research is showing that the diversity of species has changed significantly. Diversity is important to maintain balance and health in an ecosystem.

Birds of conservation concern include:

  • House Sparrow
  • Tree Sparrow
  • Starling
  • Greenfinch
  • Swift

How you can help…

  • Safely and carefully clean bird feeders to help prevent the spread of disease
  • Ensure there is always water available, especially in the extremes of winter and summer
  • Ensure feeders are cat proof
  • Avoid disturbing hedges during the breeding season
  • Take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch and submit your findings
